Rivian was founded in 2009. The company was created by Robert "RJ" Scaringe, who remains its chief executive and public face. Scaringe started the venture with a long-term vision to build electric vehicles focused on adventure, durability and sustainable transportation.
Scaringe has an academic background in automotive and mechanical engineering, and he launched the company while completing graduate studies. Under his leadership Rivian moved from stealth research into public view with the unveiling of the R1T electric pickup and R1S SUV in 2018. The firm established large-scale manufacturing at the former Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois, and began customer deliveries of the R1T in 2021.
Key milestones that shaped Rivian's early growth include a major strategic investment and commercial partnership with Amazon (including a large order for electric delivery vans) and a high-profile public listing in late 2021. Those events, combined with consumer launches, turned Rivian from a small startup into one of the better-known pure‑EV OEMs focused on the premium adventure segment.
Today Rivian positions itself as an electric vehicle and services company that blends off-road capability with modern EV technology. Its trajectory from a 2009 startup to a mass-production automaker illustrates how focused leadership, significant capital partnerships and a clear product niche can accelerate a newcomer in the automotive industry.
